In 2008, Vince Larson and his wife Nancy were heavily involved in raising funds for an orphanage in Myanmar through recycling. With just the monthly recycling from their small family, they were able to feed the entire orphanage of 30 children.

Nancy had the idea to go collect recycling from restaurants and bars in order to raise more support for this effort. The next day, Vince built a wooden fence on the back of his pickup and began asking for recycling from local businesses.
Meanwhile, Chad McKinney had begun a non-profit in San Diego to combat homelessness and bring about real change. In a chance encounter, taking a load of goods to a battered women's shelter in Tijuana, Chad and Vince hit it off and began dreaming. They dreamed of formulating a recycling company that would challenge all forms of poverty (from the "down & out" to the "up & in") and help build strong communities by creating win-win situations through a triple-bottom-line business approach.
